On October 22, 2002, Lieutenant DD Goel embarked on a patrol at the Line of Control (LOC) in the Gurez sector. Leading a section, he was assigned three tasks: to prevent infiltration, gather coordinates for a new post, and assert dominance in the area. While on patrol, he discovered signs of infiltration and unknowingly crossed the line of control. Tragically, he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in the loss of his left leg below the knee. Despite the initial shock and doubts, Goel remained determined to face the challenges ahead.
Lt Col DD Goel embarked on a remarkable journey of physical and mental recovery. Since then he has engaged in various physical activities and adventure sports like paragliding, lake water swimming, scuba diving, river rafting, skiing, bullet expeditions and half marathons. Lt Col DD Goel is the only solo paraglider in the continent with an artificial limb and has been featured in Limca book of records 2020 as the first Indian to paraglide on an artificial leg, subsequently becoming first in Indian Armed Forces. Lt Col DD Goel's story inspires readers to persevere in the face of adversity, reminding them that obstacles can be overcome by adopting a "So What" attitude. The royalties from the book are dedicated to the war wounded fund.
